Weed - New Poll: Americans View Marijuana Legalization As Inevitable
Heads up Stoner nation… Opinions change fast! Once maligned and feared by the American public, marijuana’s popularity has seen a sharp uptick recently – as public sentiment over legalizing pot has smoke passed the tipping point nationwide. Released today, a new poll points out that nearly 75% of Americans believe that pot’s legalization is nothing short of inevitable.
The new Pew Research Center poll shows the nation’s attitude towards illegal drugs is shifting fast.
“As recently as four years ago, about half (52%) said they thought the use of marijuana should not be legal; 41% said marijuana use should be legal. Today those numbers are roughly reversed – 54% favor marijuana legalization while 42% are opposed.”
The new survey discovered that approximately three-fourths of the Americans asked believe that pot sales and consumption will eventually become legal and commonplace throughout United States.
“The survey by the Pew Research Center, conducted Feb. 14-23 among 1,821 adults, finds that support for the legalization of marijuana use continues to increase. And fully 75% of the public – including majorities of those who favor and oppose the legal use of marijuana – think that the sale and use of marijuana will eventually be legal nationwide.”
Drilling down a bit further, when respondents were asked about specific marijuana use, 44% considered marijuana perfectly acceptable for medicinal purposes, 39% were fine with personal use… Leaving just 16% on the side of prohibition.
Not surprisingly, a stark majority of Americans view booze as exponentially more harmful than pot (69% – 15%) – both personally and from a societal standpoint.
Regardless of where you stand on the legalization issue, nearly all demographic groups represented in this survey believed that stepping back from mandatory prison terms was a step in the right direction. Increasing double digits since the question was first asked back in 2001.
