LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- There are 116,000 Nevadans currently out of work, but the newly regulated state medical marijuana industry shows promise for the job market.
Medical marijuana dispensaries and cultivation facilities will bring new jobs to Nevada.
The fast growing industry is creating dozens of jobs across the state, and most of them don't require workers being anywhere near a cannabis plant.
The state is looking to hire more than two dozen employees to oversee the industry. The jobs range from inspectors to auditors.
State senator Tick Segerblom, who sponsored Nevada's law on medical marijuana, says those jobs dosn't include all the people who will work in the dispensaries and cultivation facilities.
“I think it's fantastic,” Segerblom said. “The reality is, it's a win-win. People get medicine which they need more and more every day.How important this medicine is, we're getting people employed. We’re filling up warehouses that are vacant. We’re filling up storefronts that are vacant. You cannot in my opinion, overestimate how great this is.
State background checks for potential employees are similar to those for gaming industry workers, and certain felonies and drug related charges will disqualify applicants.
